Konstanz is a very old city on the south west corner of Germany. The jewel of this city being Lake Constance (Bodensee), which is just beautiful. Glistening blue in the sun.

One of the city’s landmarks is Imperia – a huge concrete statue at the harbour of the lake which is rotates. It shows a woman holding two men on her hand – the two men represent Pope Martin V and the Emperor (the men are naked except for the crown and papal tiara).  The statue was put by the harbour in 1993 and refers to a short story by Balzac, La Belle Impéria. Later in the day as we walked past the cathedral there was a show on – ‘The Gypsy in my soul’. A Grammy award winning singing troupe from San Francisco.

The Altstadt (Old city) was full of lovely buildings. During WW2 Konstanz was spared from the destruction as a result of allied bombing. The city left all its lights on at night, and fooled the bombers into thinking it was actually part of Switzerland.

Back to my neglected “blog” if you can still call it that. Anyway it’s a new year we’re in the second month (the best month) so I thought I should start on the things I set out to do in 2015. BE CREATIVE!
I love creativity in every way shape or form that it is expressed. Luckily I have been blessed with some creative skills – we are ALL blessed with creativity by the way. So yeah no excuses. There were a few ways I wanted to express myself creatively, here we go:
1. Art, freehand drawing
2. Learn to play the guitar gathering dust in the corner of my room
3. Keep knitting and crocheting and make more stuff
4. Wrote more poems and short stories – also journal and blog more
Starting with number cos it’s the only one I’ve really done. I found a great app Adobe sketch I think. I’m getting used to it but love it so far! Here’s a drawing of Sam I did:

I know it looks a little half finished but thats what I was going for ...yeah.
Why be creative? Any one who’s ever made something or created something out of wood, paper, words knows how amazing and fulfilling it feels 🙂

The Netherlands

I went travelling for a week around the Netherlands. Two words to describe it …hot and flat. I enjoyed my time there, got to cover most of the places we wanted to (Amsterdam, Den Haag, Leiden, Katvjk and Rijnsburg). Bicycle and canal rides, dinners and swimming in the warm sea ensued!

Netherlands was quite beautiful, there’s beauty in nature and people all over the world. It’s nice to be reminded of that. But you better have your euros! It was the most expensive city I’ve been to so far (I’m a student, these things count).

Recommendations: get out of some of the tourist trappings. Personally I don’t think travelling is just to see what you want to see, but seeing and experiencing what is there. And that’s what I try to do.

Loch insh/ Speyside/ Cairngorm

I am coming to the end of my time in the Scottish highlands, went for a drive and took some pics of the lovely lochs around. Ironically I didn’t go to loch ness I know right only I would do that ….but this quote makes me feel a little better:

a traveller sees she sees
a tourist sees what she has come to see
– G. K. Chesterton

It was just lovely, the air was so fresh! I’m a sucker for some good air. But yeah the world is incredibly beautiful like it was specifically designed with breathtaking aesthetics. I really enjoyed the drive can you tell?

Prehospital care

The HUGE number of conflicts around the world means prehospital care  is incredibly important. I like to think of pre hospital care as C. A. C. B. C. D. E:

  • Catastrophic haemorrhage
  • Airway
  • Cervical spine control
  • Breathing
  • Circulation
  • Disability
  • Environment

So ABC, doing simple things very well. check airways, breathing and circulation. catastrophic haemorrhage now takes priority over airway but still airway obstruction is fatal. here are some of the simple things that can be done:

<C> – catastrophic haemorrhage; compression!

  • Pressure dressing
  • Haemostatic gauze
  • Tourniquet
  • THUMB! digital pressure on artery above2014-07-08 20.48.24

(elevation is useful if venous bleeding)

C – cervical spine immobilisation!

If mechanism of injury suggests spinal injury e.g. head injury, RTA assume spinal injury until proven otherwise also if:

  • unconscious
  • neck pain/ tenderness/ limited movement
  • any neurological deficit

Pelvic fracture – pelvic sling

Pelvic #s are life threatening: loss of life usually though massive amount of blood loss – hypovolaemic shock. If mechanism of injury suggests pelvic # put on pelvic sling!!!

  • RTA
  • Motorcycle collision
  • Fall from height
  • Osteoporosis pathological #

N.B. PAIN RELIEF! – give analgesia, entonox -relieve the pain, REASSURANCE – hold someone’s hand, talk to them. I would like to know what emergency and pre-hospital care is like in Nigeria or anywhere with limited resources and extreme circumstances, I think creativity will be so important. But if you know about pre-hospital care anywhere in the world let me know 🙂

Sketching again

So I’ve began drawing and sketching again. Currently on placement and the monotony is definitely getting to me but in a positive way. It is very challenging but in all that I feel as though only one part of me is being constantly stimulated (the analytical problem solver) the other facets of who I am we’re beginning to suffer, so I thought you know what I m going to blow the dust off my artistic nature and voila!

So grateful that I can create something you know! thank God!🙏It feels so good to finish it. I remember when I was younger and I was a lot more passionate about art it became quite aggravating I was more of a perfectionist back then before life happened!! But honestly it’s fun, applying individual strokes which together make something remotely recognisable.

I hope I continue this in the future and get better with it. If you had a hobby you haven’t done in a while pick it up again. P.S. Bunny rabbit is there cos there are a lot where I am currently
